Sun damage is not part of the natural aging process associated with changes to the skin. What we call “sun damage” is the accumulated effect of exposure to the sun. While most of us cannot escape exposure to sunlight, nor should we completely, exposure to sunlight or photo-aging will affect us all. Over the course of years sun damage accumulates from the repeated exposure to UV rays. It may not be seen in the very young but it is there.
Examination of your skin with UV photography - which is not harmful, shows the accumulated effects of sun damage in all ages and its exact location on your face. While the tan from sunning does go away, the sun damage that lies under the skin does not. There is evidence that there is no such thing as a safe tan.
Photo aging reduces the amount of collagen in the skin and interferes with the production of new collagen. It is also associated with a reduction in the amount of moisture – retaining proteins resulting in the skin losing its turgor. Elastin fibres are affected and no longer are evenly spread throughout the skin but they can accumulate in clumps creating a pebbled uneven texture to the skin. After years of chronic sun-exposure you may develop brown spots, redness, enlarged pores, wrinkles and lines.
As we age the skin becomes thinner and less elastic and the amount of collagen decreases. The result being that the previously hidden changes from over exposure to the sun now become apparent.
The Rosenthal Clinic offers numerous ways to effectively treat sun damage. The best course of action can only really be established with at your free personal consultation to determine any relevant medical factors and timescales that may affect choice of treatment.

As we grow older, minor imperfections can turn into multi-layered problems. We use the latest XEO® laser system taking a 3 dimensional approach to skin rejuvenation – resulting in noticeably improved skin tone, texture, and tightness.
Each type of treatment is available on an individual basis; however, their combined use will yield great results with no down time and minimum discomfort.
Acting at the uppermost level of the dermis, IPL treats redness and rosacea, removes age spots, freckles and dilated facial blood vessels and improves skin tone. After a series of treatments the skin glows.
Laser Genesis® is a very comfortable treatment that targets the middle layer of the dermis. This is a laser treatment that stimulates collagen formation, resulting in an improvement in skin texture and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. It also treats redness and acne scars and can reduce pore size.
Penetrating still deeper into the dermis, TITAN® uses infrared energy to cause contraction of existing collagen, resulting in an immediate tightening of the loose skin. Over the next 6 months TITAN® stimulates an increased level of collagen formation and the treatment continues to produce a sustained firming effect.
Cosmeceuticals is a term that describes the product as being a ‘marriage of a cosmetic and a pharmaceutical’. The cosmeceuticals products can confer the benefit of the medicinal ingredient as opposed to a cosmetic, which is by definition designed only to enhance or in some cases disguise, features of the face and skin. The Rosenthal Clinic sells a range of cosmeceuticals to augment the treatment that we offer
In answer to your skin program or any concerns that you may have, our staff can advise you on the contents of a particular product and how the product can be of benefit to you.

The eCO2 Fractional Laser is a state of the art laser system using a technology that breaks up the carbon dioxide laser beam into many finer beams ( micro-fractions) that result in a minimally invasive procedure to the surface of the skin that leaves areas of the skin intact so they will assist in fast recovery. This fractional laser can give astonishing results in only one treatment. You can now easily and with minimal downtime regain that youthful look. The treatment stimulates new collagen production and shrinks the skin.
The eCO2 can show an astonishing improvement in fine lines and wrinkles (crow’s feet is a good example), the effects of sun-damage, discolouration, small veins and skin laxity. This laser is very effective in the removal of scars including acne scars that may have persisted for many years. Skin tags and some other pigmented lesions are also easily treated with the eCO2. Improvement in texture of the skin can be amazing.
It takes about an hour after the topical anaesthetic is put on.
All eCO2 Fractional Laser treatments are done by Dr. Gillian Rosenthal with the assistance of a laser technician.
Prior to the treatment we will take every step to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure. We take extra care to ensure that you will be comfortable during the treatment and afterwards. We will provide you with post-treatment care instructions.
We do not give these treatments without a consultation with Dr.Rosenthal. She will carefully examine your skin to determine if this is the best treatment to achieve your goals. Alternative treatment options will be outlined. If you decide to have the eCO2 treatment you will then be given pre-treatment instructions and also be made aware of the post-treatment procedures.
You will look red and swollen. By the 5th day post treatment the swelling will have diminished and the redness minimized. After 72 hours you can apply makeup to minimize the redness. Many clients arrange their eCO2 treatment for a Thursday or Friday to minimize the potential of time off work. The post-treatment care that we advise will help to minimize the symptoms and as part of the treatment we will book an appointment for you to return after a few days so that we may monitor your progress.
After about a week you will see changes that will continue to be enhanced over the next 6 months. You should within a week feel that your facial skin is tighter, that the surface is smoother and that wrinkles and sun damage have either gone or been minimized. The timing and extent of the results is totally dependent on the individual being treated, the extent of the treatment that was done and the following of our after care instructions.

There are a variety of fillers that are available for use in restoring the loss in volume due to aging, the reduction or elimination of lines and the enhancement of facial features such as the chin. We use several types of fillers. Those consisting of hyaluronic acid which is a product occuring naturally in the skin. These re-volumize the area treated and they may also induce some degree of stimulation of collagen production in the area treated. We also use Sculptra™ and Radiesse™ that depend on the significant production by the fibroblasts in your skin of new collagen. Fillers are most commonly used in the face and hands.
The overall result is the reduction or elimination of lines and folds and a restoration of more youthful contours as the hollowed areas are refilled. See the section on Soft Lift™ which uses fillers to provide amazing results in obtaining an immediate youthful fresh look that will take years off your appearance.
Dr. Rosenthal is a physician that has been especially trained in the process of using fillers. Many of your clients remark on her attention to detail, her artistic 'eye' in regaining a youthful look, her experience and overall skill.
At your free consultation we will examine your skin and facial structure to determine whether fillers will be beneficial to enhancing your appearance. We may recommend other treatments in conjunction with fillers. At the time of the consultation we will discuss with you your treatment goals and provide you with an estimate of the cost of the treatments.
We use non-permanent facial fillers composed of cross-linked hyaluronic acid - Restylane®, Juvederm® and Teosyal®. The cross-linking ensures prolonged stability of the filler. By holding water, the gel hydrates and gives volume to the skin. In time, the hyaluronic gel particles are slowly absorbed and replaced by water. When totally absorbed, the gel disappears-unnoticed by the body.
Juvederm® Voluma® is the latest product produced by Allergan (also the maker of BOTOX). Voluma® is used for optimal lift and re-shaping can last up to 18 months.
On average, each treatment takes about 45 minutes.
Previously the Injection of fillers required the use of either a topical numbing cream or injection of a local anaesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable. Now the filler is pre-mixed with anaesthetic (freezing) to ensure that the procedure is comfortable. Filler is injected, using a tiny needle, into each target area.
The side effects can include localized temporary bruising and swelling, both of which can be reduced by the use of cooling before and after treatment. Prior to the procedure, Dr. Rosenthal will discuss the process and side effects. At that time you may ask any questions that you may have.
Studies have shown that hyaluronic acid fillers can last 9 – 12 months. They tend to last longer when they are injected deeper into the skin to restore volume. In these situations, although a small “top up” may be needed after one year but the treatment can be very durable- lasting several years. For lip rejuvenation and enhancement and in the treatment of areas subject to considerable movement of muscles the effect lasts for a shorter period but can be enhanced by combining the filler with a BOTOX treatment.
Sculptra® can last more than 2 years, and Radiesse® can last over 1 year.
You will be able to immediately appreciate the effect of the filler. There may be mild redness and minor bruising but this should quickly resolve.
Results are instantaneous.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is made in the laboratory by a bacterial fermentation process. It is highly purified material and hence allergic reactions rarely occur. Pre-testing is not required. As HA represents a durable form of a natural constituent of the skin and other parts of our body, it is very well tolerated and readily incorporated into the surrounding tissues. HA can provide a very natural smooth appearance to the skin. Radiesse® has been used medically for many years and is extremely safe and biocompatible.
Mild bruising which can be minimized through the use of cooling before and after the procedure. There can be transient redness, swelling, itching or discomfort and with lip injections the swelling can last for longer periods. If you have suffered from cold sores, antiviral medication will be provided to prevent cold sores from breaking out in the treatment area. The use of fillers should be deferred if your skin is actively infected, or if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

All microderm abrasion systems work like using sandpaper on your face. HydraFacial is the only system that gently defoliates your skin while at the same time infusing into the skin serums that will improve the texture and tone of your skin.
You will immediately see that the appearance of fine lines and pores will be minimized. Unwanted facial pigmentation will be reduced and there will be a restoration of that youthful glow to your skin. There can be benefits for aging skin with the infusion of anti-oxidants and collagen stimulating TNS serum during the HydraFacial treatment.
The Mosaic Fractional Laser is a state of the art laser system using Controlled Chaos Technology which in effect causes multiple microscopic lasers being applied to the skin in random sequence, in a fashion not unlike spray painting.
This fractional laser can give astonishing results. You can now easily and with minimal downtime regain that youthful look. The treatment stimulates new collagen production and restores that youthful glow to your skin.
Now you can have a youthful appearance by treating those conditions that are typically associated with premature signs of aging and sun damage such as: excessive redness, large pores, uneven texture, fine-lines and wrinkles.
The Mosaic can show an astonishing improvement in fine lines and wrinkles around areas such as the eyes and mouth. The treatment can correct uneven skin colour, minimize the effects of sun-damage, reduce pore size and can substantially improve overall skin texture. This laser will also improve – by diminishing the appearance of scarring from either acne or surgical procedures.
It takes about an hour after the topical anaesthetic is put on.
Prior to the treatment you will receive treatment to ensure that you are not uncomfortable during the laser procedure. Typically all that is needed is topical numbing crème and ibuprofen. We take extra care to ensure that you will be comfortable during the treatment and afterwards. We will provide you with post-treatment care instructions and will also schedule a follow up visit to chart your progress.
After your first treatment you may see a very positive change, but for best longer lasting results you will require about 3 treatments. In the case of deep acne scarring you may require 5 treatments.
You can have treatment on the face, neck, décolleté, hands, arms, abdomen and scars – on most places.
Your facial appearance will be red and swollen – somewhat like sunburn. This can be covered with make-up. You can return to you regular routine or work the next day. Within 48 hours your skin will undergo ‘bronzing’ and there will be shedding of flakes. When this is completed your skin will be smooth and glowing. The changes are completely natural and while you may receive remarks about how good your skin looks, there will be no evidence that a laser procedure has been done other than an improvement in your appearance. The collagen production that is stimulated by the treatment continues for 6 -12 months, so you will continue to see additional subtle changes.
Pearl is the “one laser to choose” to renew your skin’s surface with quick, visible results. Pearl treats fine lines on the face and neck, uneven skin texture and light & dark spots caused by sun damage.
The Pearl laser replaces the entire top sun-damaged layer of skin with new healthy skin. Simultaneously, it sends heat to deeper layers of the skin stimulating new collagen growth, filling out and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. New collagen growth continues for 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment. The combination of new skin and decreased wrinkles results in a healthier, more youthful appearance.
Unlike “fractional” treatments, Pearl treats the entire face, minimizing the number of required treatments. Typically, only 1-2 treatments are necessary to renew your skin.
During a Pearl treatment, the top layer of the skin is treated with pulses of light. The Pearl laser is guided over the skin, gently removing the top layer of the epidermis and heating a layer of tissue below it. A natural protective dressing is formed on the skin’s surface. After 3-4 days, the protective dressing peels off revealing new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath.
Pearl will smooth the skin’s texture, as well as soften fine lines and wrinkles, on the face, neck, upper chest and hands.
The treatment takes approximately 10-15 minutes for a full face. The treatment feels like a series of brief pinches.
Downtime is the time spent recovering from a procedure. With “social” downtime, you can continue your normal daily activities. However, you may not wish to attend important social events because after a Pearl treatment your face will appear pink/red for 3-4 days.
Patients of any age with sun damage, uneven skin texture and fine lines and wrinkles can benefit from Pearl treatments; however, the most common age group seeking treatment is 25-60.
After treatment, the skin will look like it is sunburned. Ointment will be applied on the skin to keep it moist. The skin will need to be kept moist for 3–4 days. Since you cannot wear sunscreen during this time, you will need to wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure for a few days following the treatment. You are free to wear make-up starting on day 3. After 3-4 days, the top layer of skin peels off revealing new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath.
Many patients experience excellent results after one treatment. Others may want a second treatment for best results.
You will see noticeable results on day 3 or 4, when the superficial tissue has peeled off, leaving fresh, new, healthy skin underneath.
Pearl offers the most effective treatment to address fine lines & wrinkles, sun damaged skin and uneven texture without wound care and the extended downtime required with traditional Erbium and CO2 laser procedures.
Today’s fractionated technologies treat only small portions of the face during each treatment. Typically, 3 treatments, each with 4-6 days of downtime and spaced a month apart, are required to treat the face.
Yes, FDA clearance was received in March 2007 for Pearl for skin resurfacing and the treatment of wrinkles. Pearl is used primarily on the face but has also been used on the neck, upper chest and hands.
Acne, sun damaged skin and pre-cancerous skin changes (actinic keratoses) can be effectively treated using Photodynamic Therapy. The skin will improve to have a more even coloured tone with smaller pore size and smoother texture.
The treatment consists of using a light source – either the Blu-U® or Intelligent Pulsed Light (IPL) - to activate Levulan® (ALA) which has previously been applied to the skin. This kills the bacteria, dries up the oil glands and unplugs the pores.
Antibiotics can be used to treat severe acne; however, the response to the drug is usually delayed by 2 – 3 months. Another problem in using antibiotics is the increased resistance of the acne-causing bacteria so that the treatment may be unsuccessful. Even when the acne seems to improve with the use of an antibiotic, the effect may be short lived. Antibiotic therapy for acne needs to be used for months or years, which can raise oncerns among both doctors and patients.
This drug is a derivative of vitamin A and can be an effective treatment for acne. Accutane® is well known to produce undesirable side effects including: severe dryness of the skin and eyes, nasal passages and mouth, moodiness, sometimes amounting to severe depression, abnormal liver function and lipid profile and deformities in babies born to mothers who took Accutane® during pregnancy.
A series of 3 treatments 2 – 4 weeks apart is usually most effective. Some people may be satisfied with the results of one treatment. The PDT system can also produce excellent cosmetic benefits by reducing sun damage, improving skin tone, colour and texture.
This is a non-invasive treatment that erases skin damage without disrupting the skin surface. There is no downtime associated with this treatment. Compared with the earlier generation of IPL devices, the light source has been optimized for effective treatment while increasing comfort, safety and results. It can safely and effectively treat a wide variety of skin conditions simultaneously: freckles, brown spots and mottled pigmentation, redness, rosacea, small broken blood vessels, sun damaged aging skin and fine lines and wrinkles
The visible light delivered by the IPL procedure is selectively absorbed by the pigmented spots and red areas on your skin. Following each treatment the brown pigment gradually rises to the surface of the skin and flakes off. Dilated blood vessels in the skin disappear. With repeated treatments, collagen formation is stimulated, bringing about improvements in skin texture and the lessening of fine lines and wrinkles. It smoothes the skin by erasing the effects of sun damage while at the same time creating a youthful glow.
IPL is an innovative way to quickly, safely and comfortably improve your skin's texture, tone and colour. It can be used to treat your face, chest, arms and hands, without gel or topical anesthetics. Signs of sun damage and age spots will usually flake off after one or two treatments, leaving clearer, younger-looking skin.
The treatment results are often subtle. On average, you may require four to six treatments in order to achieve optimal results. Every patient's condition and needs vary. The results and number of treatments you can expect will be assessed at your consultation.
When the handpiece is placed on your skin, it will feel cool and comfortable. When the pulse of light is delivered, you may feel a mild, brief pinching sensation.
Many patients see significant improvement within two to three weeks of treatment. Your complexion will be clearer and younger-looking. However, your final result may not be apparent for a month or more.
Typically, one or two treatments are sufficient to see dramatic improvement in skin colour. Additional treatments may be required for very large or dark spots, densely freckled areas, or excessively sun-damaged skin. We recommend 5 treatments for the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and a marked improvement in skin texture.
Over time due to sun exposure new spots may appear. These can be removed with further treatments. We recommend the liberal application of full spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater and reducing sun exposure.
While IPL by itself is effective in reducing overall sun damage, by combining the IPL treatment with Levulan® there is an increased level of improvement. You will see an even greater cosmetic benefit with each treatment – reduced pore size, more even coloured tone, smoother texture and restoration of a youthful, rejuvenated look.
As we grow older, minor imperfections can turn into multi-layered problems. We use the latest XEO® laser system, which takes a 3 dimensional approach to skin rejuvenation – resulting in noticeably improved skin tone, texture, and tightness. We can treat the skin at 3 different depths using 3 different techniques – IPL, Laser Genesis® and TITAN®. Each type of treatment is available on an individual basis; however, when used together the treatments can achieve outstanding results including firmer, glowing skin.
This is an exciting new approach to non-ablative skin rejuvenation.
