What is acne scarring?

Unfortunately acne scarring is a frequent occurrence and the unsightly damage to the skin can be difficult to treat but fortunately there are now effective methods to minimize the scarring.

Acne scarring results from the lesions created by the body when reacting to the acne causing bacteria. Scarring will worsen if the active acne is not treated, but after the acne is gone the scarring remains and gets to be more noticeable as our skin ages.

Recent advances in laser therapy now offer effective treatments in minimizing the effects of acne scarring.

What treatments are available for acne scarring?

Both non-ablative Mosaic and ablative eco2 lasers can be used and both treatments are available at the Rosenthal Clinic. We also offer another approach based upon the use of Laser Genesis. Treatment: eCO2 Fractional Laser

What is eCO2^® Fractional Laser and how does it work?

The eCO2 Fractional Laser is a state of the art laser system using a technology that breaks up the carbon dioxide laser beam into many finer beams ( micro-fractions) that result in a minimally invasive procedure to the surface of the skin that leaves areas of the skin intact so they will assist in fast recovery. This fractional laser can give astonishing results in only one treatment. You can now easily and with minimal downtime regain that youthful look. The treatment stimulates new collagen production and shrinks the skin.

What are the uses for the eCO2^® Fractional Laser?

The eCO2 can show an astonishing improvement in fine lines and wrinkles (crow’s feet is a good example), the effects of sun-damage, discolouration, small veins and skin laxity. This laser is very effective in the removal of scars including acne scars that may have persisted for many years. Skin tags and some other pigmented lesions are also easily treated with the eCO2. Improvement in texture of the skin can be amazing.

How long does a treatment take?

It takes about an hour after the topical anaesthetic is put on.

Who does the treatment?

All eCO2 Fractional Laser treatments are done by Dr. Gillian Rosenthal with the assistance of a laser technician.

Is the eCO2 treatment painful?

Prior to the treatment we will take every step to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure. We take extra care to ensure that you will be comfortable during the treatment and afterwards. We will provide you with post-treatment care instructions.

How can I tell if the eCO2 is the right treatment?

We do not give these treatments without a consultation with Dr.Rosenthal. She will carefully examine your skin to determine if this is the best treatment to achieve your goals. Alternative treatment options will be outlined. If you decide to have the eCO2 treatment you will then be given pre-treatment instructions and also be made aware of the post-treatment procedures.

What will I look like immediately after treatment?

You will look red and swollen. By the 5th day post treatment the swelling will have diminished and the redness minimized. After 72 hours you can apply makeup to minimize the redness. Many clients arrange their eCO2 treatment for a Thursday or Friday to minimize the potential of time off work. The post-treatment care that we advise will help to minimize the symptoms and as part of the treatment we will book an appointment for you to return after a few days so that we may monitor your progress.

When will I see results?

After about a week you will see changes that will continue to be enhanced over the next 6 months. You should within a week feel that your facial skin is tighter, that the surface is smoother and that wrinkles and sun damage have either gone or been minimized. The timing and extent of the results is totally dependent on the individual being treated, the extent of the treatment that was done and the following of our after care instructions.

What is it Laser Genesis^®

Laser Genesis^® skin therapy is an innovative, technologically advanced method to promote vibrant and healthy-looking skin in men and women.

Now you can have a youthful appearance by treating those conditions that are typically associated with premature signs of aging and sun damage such as: excessive redness, large pores, uneven texture, fine-lines and wrinkles.

The Laser Genesis procedure has been scientifically proven to produce new collagen, improving uneven skin texture and the appearance of scars, including those resulting from acne.

What can you expect?

The Laser Genesis procedure utilizes non-invasive laser technology which safely, discretely and effectively treats fine lines and wrinkles, diffuse redness, large pores, uneven skin texture and scars. With our Cutera XEO laser you can expect to see subtle yet consistent results after each treatment, without side effects. Treatments can be performed in a relaxed, comfortable manner without the use of topical anesthetics or gel.

How does Laser Genesis work?

By gently heating the upper dermis well below your skin's surface, Laser Genesis stimulates collagen regrowth. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness.

How many treatments will I need?

The treatment results are often subtle. On average, you may require four to six treatments in order to achieve optimal results. Every patient's condition and needs vary. The results and number of treatments you can expect will be assessed at your consultation.

Is Laser Genesis painful?

No. Most people experience a pleasant warming sensation, so relaxing that some have been known to fall asleep during the treatment.

What kind of textural improvements can you expect?

Over the course of four to five treatments, Laser Genesis can help restore the skin's youthful glow and appearance by smoothing out uneven texture caused by aging, sun damage or scars. You will see a more even, healthy complexion as large pores are reduced in size, and minor imperfections are diminished.
